Sugar-free sodas have become a regular part of daily life for many.
The soft drink Pepsi Max, in particular, is consumed daily by a great many Danes, precisely because it is sugar-free and almost calorie-free.
But does sugar-free automatically mean it's good for the body?
Is sugar-free soda unhealthy?
Many people ask if Pepsi Max is healthy, but even though it's sugar-free, it cannot be considered a healthy choice.
Sugar-free soda contains no sugar and almost no calories, and is therefore often perceived as a healthier alternative to regular soda.
But the question still arises:
Is diet cola healthy for the body?
Sugar-free – but not necessarily healthy
When something is sugar-free, it doesn't automatically mean it's healthy.
Sugar-free soda is not harmful in itself, but a large and daily intake can be unhealthy for some, especially if it affects appetite, habits, and the body's signals.
Many people use sugar-free soda as a regular part of their daily life – not as an indulgence, but as something they "just have to have."
Pepsi Max, Coke Light and aspartame
Pepsi Max and Coke Light are sweetened with aspartame, an artificial, calorie-free sweetener.
Aspartame is approved and researched, but that doesn't mean it's healthy in large quantities.
When the body experiences sweet taste without energy, it can, for some people:
- Increase the craving for sweets
- Disrupt hunger and satiety signals
- Maintain cravings
For these individuals, sugar-free soda may be perceived as more unhealthy than one might initially think.
Caffeine in soft drinks
Cola also contains caffeine. Caffeine can be stimulating, but a high and daily intake can for some cause restlessness, sleep problems, and heart palpitations. Poor sleep and inner restlessness can in turn affect appetite, energy levels, and make weight loss more difficult.
Phosphoric acid in soda
Soda contains phosphoric acid, which is an acid that can affect both teeth and the body's calcium balance. The acid wears down tooth enamel, and with frequent intake, the body needs calcium to neutralize the acid. Over time, a high consumption can therefore strain both teeth and bones.
Sugar-free soft drinks and weight loss
Many people choose Pepsi Max or Coke Light to support weight loss.
Calorie-wise it makes sense – but in practice the picture is more complex.
Sugar-free soft drinks can:
- Increase cravings for sweet snacks
- Make it harder to notice real hunger
- Maintain unhealthy habits around sweets and hinder stable weight loss
Therefore, many find that weight loss stalls even though they "do everything right" – and here, daily intake of sugar-free soft drinks can be an overlooked factor.

Sugar-free soft drinks and inflammation
Inflammation in the body is often linked to diet and lifestyle.
Some people experience that artificial sweeteners can contribute to:
- Bloating
- Discomfort in the stomach and joints
- General inflammation
This does not apply to everyone – but for some, reducing or eliminating sugar-free soft drinks makes a noticeable difference.
I was addicted to Pepsi Max myself
I used to drink a lot of Pepsi Max myself and found that it wasn't easy to quit again.
This made me more aware of how big a role sugar-free soft drinks can actually play in everyday life, and I feel so much better in my body in all areas without it.
Is sugary soda healthier than Pepsi Max?
No – sugary soda is not healthy.
When you drink sugary soda, the body receives a large amount of quickly absorbed sugar at once. This causes blood sugar to rise significantly, after which the body reacts by releasing insulin to lower blood sugar again.
This can lead to:
- Large fluctuations in blood sugar, which can cause fatigue, restlessness, and renewed hunger shortly after
- Fluctuating energy levels, where a short energy boost is often followed by an energy slump
- Inhibited fat burning, because the body prioritizes handling sugar over burning fat
- Increased appetite and cravings, which can make weight loss more difficult
Regular intake of sugary soda can therefore counteract both stable energy and weight loss.
So it's not about choosing between Pepsi Max or sugary cola
But about reducing both and choosing more:
- Water
- Mineral water
- Natural alternatives
Conclusion: Sugar-free soda is not a health product
Pepsi Max and Diet Coke are not dangerous, but they are also not healthy choices just because they are sugar-free.
If you:
- Drink sugar-free soda daily
- Struggle with weight loss
- Experience cravings or inflammation
... it may be worth considering what role sugar-free soda plays in your daily life.
Small adjustments can make a big difference to the body's balance.
